How we contribute
Alongside strengthening connections among graduates and encouraging exchange between alumni and students, a key aim of the Alumni and Friends Association is to support research and teaching at Leuphana. To this end, the association regularly funds projects at Leuphana as well as projects led by alumni, students, and student initiatives. The AFL supports both events and projects with financial and non-financial assistance.
Engagement through event funding
The Alumni and Friends Association is present in everyday university life and helps a wide range of events at Leuphana succeed, with financial and practical support. By organising and funding events, the AFL encourages contact between alumni and the university.
Events at Leuphana that the AFL regularly supports include the Start Week, where first-semester students at Leuphana College start their studies each October with a project, the dies academicus as a ceremonial close to the academic year with a summer festival, or, for example, essay competitions, which invite school pupils and students to explore changing topics in an essay.
As a co-organiser, the AFL also contributes to the success of the annual graduation ceremony and the graduates’ ball in November, where Leuphana students celebrate the end of their time at university together. The association supports the ceremony and the ball financially. In the past, the association and the university also published the graduates’ compendium for the occasion, which serves graduates as a yearbook of their graduating class and also lets them introduce themselves to attractive employers with a short profile. All graduates receive the compendium free of charge at the ceremony. The AFL also makes sure graduates receive photos of their certificate presentation as a lasting memory of the end of their studies.

Engagement through project funding
Funded projects have included, for example, the Lüneburg Online Marketing Conference, the adh-Open Faustball, a fistball tournament of the German University Sports Association hosted by Leuphana University Sports, the UN-Projekt National Model United Nations (NMUN), which, with the AFL’s support, was able to send a group of students to the NMUN conference in New York, and the student project Gedankengut, which collected and published student papers in an interdisciplinary book.
The AFL also supports student projects by awarding prizes at the annual dies academicus. The prizes went to the projects „Makoni-Tea“, “Mapuche music project” and “Accessible tourism in Lüneburg” in the Service Learning category for student work from courses, and to the projects „ROCK YOUR LIFE!“, „sneep – student’s network for ethics in economics and practice“and “Kultur semester ticket” in the Voluntary Engagement category.
Do you also have an interesting project that needs the AFL’s support? Then apply informally to the Alumni and Friends Association by introducing your project and explaining what support you need. The AFL board then votes on your proposal at a board meeting.
